One of a small group of works Shafik Eshtai made in 2016, Winter Threshold returns to a recurring subject: a musician tuning an oud. Built with thin washes that let the drawing show through, the surface holds olive, ash and a thread of rose; the portrait format keeps the eye close to the subject. A work of unusual patience.
